May 9, 2021 – Sixth Sunday of Easter

From Fr. Sinoj Pynadath, our Parochial Vicar

  1. Happy Mother’s Day: A beautiful Spanish proverb says “An ounce of mother is better than a pound of clergy.” Motherhood is a special vocation to be the presence of God in the world. They represent the sacrificial love of God that goes beyond even to the point of “laying down” life. Let us gratefully admit the fact that we cannot return in the same measure, all the love that our mothers have given us. Therefore let us thank our mothers today by lavishing our love on them if they are alive and by offering our prayers for them if they have gone for their eternal reward. May God’s Love live!

  2. The greatest Commandment: The message of the Sixth Sunday of Easter is the Commandment of Love. The Mystery of Incarnation is God’s Love. In the Gospel Jesus testifies to God’s Love and then showed it through His suffering, death, and Resurrection. He also said that His love for us, His disciples, is just like the love God the Father has for Him. As the Father went to the extent of sacrificing His Son, Jesus calls us to live the Commandment of Love to the extent of overcoming all the barriers that can be created by our physical needs and nature. The indwelling of God in us is possible only when we sacrifice ourselves to follow and live the Word of God in our lives which requires us to transcend our likes in loving everyone.

  3. Another example of God’s Love: Fr. Damien (1840-1889), a young priest from Belgium, requested to be stationed on the island of Molokai, where the lepers and the diseased were “dropped-off” to die. He realized that those people also deserved God’s love. The sacrificial love of God flowed through him and they experienced it and died peacefully. He too died from leprosy fulfilling the commandment of love in a fuller sense by “laying down” his life. We remember him on Monday, May 10th.

  4. St. Matthias: After Jesus had ascended, the disciples met together with Mary waiting for the promised coming of the Holy Spirit. Meanwhile Peter felt it necessary that the place of the fallen Judas must be filled. The choice was to be made of one from those who had witnessed the ministry of Jesus from the beginning and who could bear witness to the Resurrection. With the help of God Matthias was chosen by lot and he is said to have affirmed the choice by his remarkable witness and mortification of flesh.
