I. May Procession and Coronation of Mary:  May is traditionally a month honoring Mary!  Our May procession will follow the 9:00am Mass on Sunday, May 4.  Those not attending the 9:00am Mass can join us near the grotto at 10:00am. Every family is encouraged to bring flowers to carry in the procession and leave in the Marian Grotto on the south side of the Cathedral (between the Cathedral and rectory) where we will have a crowning of Mary ceremony.  The children who have just received their First Communion are invited to wear their special clothing and participate in this procession. You are invited to coffee and doughnuts, fruit, juice afterward.

II. Holy Week Services: The experience of Holy Week liturgy at our Mother Church was new to me this year, but I can’t say enough good things about how wonderful this week was! A big thank you to Michael Conley, Director of Music and Liturgy, for his investment in the Lenten Season, especially our Holy Week liturgies; thanks also to our choir and cantors. Gratitude also to Donna Murphy, Director of Faith Formation, for her faithful and good ministry with our Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. As chair of the Art and Environment Committee, I thank Patrick Clary and his committee for transforming our beautiful Cathedral into a more beautiful space for Easter Liturgy. Parishioners who attended Holy Week services are to be commended; those days speak directly to our faith.

III. Parish Pastoral Council Nominations are being accepted up to and including Monday, April 28. Pray about and think about people in our parish who might be good servant leaders at this particular juncture in our history! The more diverse our Council, the better!

IV. Fr Suneesh on Holiday!  Your parochial vicar will return to his home state of Kerala in India to renew his visa and for vacation. He will leave Tuesday, April 29, and return Friday, May 30, in time for our priesthood ordinations on Saturday, May 31. Pray for Fr. Suneesh, his parents and family, as well as his brother priests in the Congregation of the Heralds of the Good News who are missionaries in 19 countries. We are blessed by Fr. Suneesh’s ministry in St. Stephen Cathedral and Blessed Sacrament parishes. No doubt he will experience tremendous homesickness for his pastor while in India!!

V. Fr. Tony Shonis’ mother, Seconda Shonis, died Holy Saturday, April 19.  The funeral was at Holy Family Catholic Church in Luzerne, PA.  Fr. Tony has two sisters, Mary Ann and Marilyn, and a brother, Dr. John Shonis.  His sister, Mary Ann, has taken care of their mother day and night for the last seven years.  His mother died at home, in the house their father built himself for the  family in 1960-1961. The family address is 32 Hughes Street, Luzerne, PA, 18709.  Fr. Tony’s address is Holy Name of Jesus Church, 511 Second Street, Henderson, KY, 42420.  May she rest in eternal peace of the Resurrected Lord!  Please remember Fr. Tony and his family in your prayers.

Easter Joy and Hope,

Fr. Jerry
