Pastor’s Perspective

Published on May 24th, 2013

Dear Parishioners,

Since I have been away, I have had two opportunities to see Pope Francis.  On Sunday, the 12th, I attended a canonization Mass he celebrated in St. Peter’s Square.  It was a beautiful day, and I was fortunate to be seated very near the altar, just behind where the attending Cardinals were positioned.  Then, last Wednesday, I was at the Holy Father’s Wednesday audience.  It was an intimate meeting between the Pope and me and 50,000 of my close friends!  I was blessed by these opportunities and happy to have seen our new Pope and to be inspired by his presence and his messages.

Between those two encounters, I was in Galway, Ireland, attending the annual conference of the Canon Law Society of Great Britain and Ireland. The folks there were very welcoming and gracious.

This past week, two of my colleagues from the US Canon Law Society joined me in Rome, and we have met with officials of several Vatican Curia offices, as well as with the faculties and students of canon law in a couple of the Pontifical universities.

It has been a good trip, but I am ready to get back home.  If I make all my connections, I will return to Owensboro on Monday evening.

Love, Fr. John
