Pastor’s Perspective

Dear Parishioners,

As I have frequently reported, the work in Church is progressing.  I was excited last week when the marble in the center aisle was installed.  Check out the pictures on our website.  I think you will be impressed with the beauty.  The Granda employees in Spain are on vacation this month; however they assured me that this will not alter their schedule regarding our project.  Although I do not have an exact date, they have said that they intend to ship the materials sometime in September.

As you are aware, Smothers Park is scheduled to reopen this Friday.  In conjunction with this reopening, Mayor Payne has requested that the churches in town ring their Church bells on Thursday at 11:04 a.m. in memory of Col. Charles Shelton, the last official POW of the Vietnam War.  St. Stephen Cathedral is happy to join other churches in the area by participating in this small tribute.

There is an article in this week’s Our Sunday Visitor entitled “Parishes and decline of community” (page 13).  The author, Russell Shaw, describes a trend that has concerned me for some time.  The growing sense of individualism is not healthy for our communities or for our parishes.  Take a look at the essay and see what you think.

At the meeting last week, the Finance Committee recommended that the work in the Undercroft should begin as soon as possible.  Although the committee did not recommend a blank check, they are supportive of the suggestions that have been made by those working on this project.  It is our intention to have the work completed by the time of the reopening of the Cathedral on November 18th.

Love, Fr. John

The Catholic community of Saint Stephen Cathedral serves to welcome, evangelize and worship in the name of Jesus Christ.
