Dear Parishioners,

Pre-Registration for the 2011-2012 academic year in the Owensboro Catholic Schools will begin on March 14th and conclude on March 31st. Once again, the school system is asking parents to present the voucher from the parish at the time of pre-registration. I want to take this opportunity to remind you of the requirements for a voucher from St. Stephen. To qualify for a voucher a  family must be registered in the  parish;  they must attend Mass here regularly and must have completed a current stewardship form on which they commit themselves to some form of involvement/ministry in the parish, as well as a financial promise.  In addition, we ask that all high school students who receive a voucher commit themselves to some aspect of parish ministry.  In essence, the voucher is a statement that a family is practicing their faith and active in the parish.  The voucher entitles a family to receive a significantly reduced tuition rate.  In addition to the tuition paid by each family, the parish will contribute $2,700 for each student in the OCS during the next academic year.

As you know Ash Wednesday is this week.  You will find the Lenten regulations for fasting and abstaining elsewhere in the bulletin.  However, let me point out that the obligation to fast rests with those between the ages of 18 and 59.  All those fourteen and over are required to abstain from meat on all the Friday’s of Lent.  People over 59 are not excluded from this prescription and are, therefore, obliged to abstain from meat.  Even though youth under the age of fourteen are exempt from this requirement, I encourage parents to teach your younger children the value of such sacrifice.

Last Sunday, a writer for our local paper penned a misguided article entitled “Obama Takes Right Step on Gay Marriage.” The author stated that “marriage is one area where government shouldn’t intervene.” Marriage is a fundamental institution in society and the government has always intervened, requiring a license, determining who is of legal age to marry, who can witness marriages etc.  I could write at length about our president’s unfortunate decision not to support the “Defense of Marriage Act,” but I refer you to the statement from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops elsewhere in this bulletin.

Love, Fr. John
