St. Stephen Cathedral Mass
Blessed Sacrament Chapel Mass
Published on August 8th, 2014
I. Feast of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven: This solemn holyday of obligation/opportunity celebrates the bodily taking up of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven at the end of her earthly life. Though this doctrine was dogmatically defined in 1950 by Pope Pius XII, accounts of the assumption of Mary into heaven survive from the third and fourth centuries. The first Scripture reading for this solemnity, from Revelation 11:19 a,12:1–6a,10ab, is part of a vision the author had, so it is highly symbolic language. The description has given rise to countless artistic representations of the Blessed Mother. The chapter recounts both the divine deliverance of the woman and her child, as well as the cosmic battle between good and evil, in which the good, which is of God, triumphs over Satan and the powers of evil, thus inaugurating the Kingdom of God. Our Mass schedule for this holyday: Thursday eve, August 14: 6:00pm; Friday, August 15: 7:00am and 12:05pm (noon). There is also Mass at Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 6:00pm on Friday, August 15.
II. Baptismal Promises: At Baptism, parents promise to share their faith with their children by molding, forming, and educating them in the Catholic faith. In support of this, all Cathedral children, ages kindergarten-8th grade, who are not enrolled in Catholic schools, and all new students entering the Faith Formation program, must be registered for the coming school year, which begins on August 17. Children who attend Catholic schools are also welcome to enroll in Faith Formation. This is a ministry of our parish and all are welcome! Thanks to those who have volunteered to share your faith as catechists and helpers! I am grateful to Donna Murphy, [email protected], Director of Faith Formation. Be aware that we have a two-year preparation for both First Eucharist and Confirmation.
III. Our Cathedral Preschool provides a wonderful learning and nurturing atmosphere for these impressionable children of God. Please encourage your family or friends with preschool-age children to consider our Cathedral Preschool. Call 270-926-1652 or visit www.cathedralpreschool.com.
IV. Brescia University Collection will be taken up in all our parishes this weekend. BU is committed to providing intellectual and moral formation for its students, which fosters a renewal of faith and encourages students to pursue professions in the spirit of servant-leadership. The Catholic Connection Grant allows Catholic high school students an opportunity to study with the best and the brightest at Brescia University at a tuition reduction of 50%. During the 2013-2014 academic year, $560,500 was awarded through the Catholic Connection Grant, which benefited 59 students. Be as generous as you can to this great Catholic resource!
Joy and Hope,
