St. Stephen Cathedral Mass
Blessed Sacrament Chapel Mass
Published on November 30th, 2012
Happy New Year! This weekend, we begin the beautiful season of Advent and are surrounded by the special colors, songs and symbols that are a part of this holy season. I encourage you to take advantage of the Advent materials we have made available for you and your family. They can assist you in your prayer and thus help us to remain focused on the true meaning of these increasingly hectic days. Join us for a brief time of prayer each Sunday afternoon this month, and don’t forget our parish Penance Service scheduled for December 16th.
Next Saturday, the Diocese will celebrate our 75th anniversary as a diocese, with Mass at the Sportscenter (11:00 a.m.) I hope that many of you will be able to join us for this special occasion. Because of the diocesan celebration, Confessions will be from 8:00 – 10:00 next Saturday and there will not be a 12:05 Mass that day.
A couple of weeks ago, the priests of the diocese had a continuing education day on the subject of pornography. It was not a pleasant subject, but it was very enlightening. Surely you are aware that this is an increasingly serious issue in our families and society. The Internet has made it even more seductive. I may have other things to say about this topic in the future, but for now, I share a couple of troublesome facts with you. Forty-seven percent of Christians say that Internet pornography is a problem in their home. The average age of first exposure to Internet porn is eleven. Only 23% of parents have rules about what their kids can do on the computer. What are your family rules in this regard?
Love, Fr. John
