Pastor’s Perspective

Dear Parishioners,

Today is a very special day here at St. Stephen.  Not only is it Pentecost Sunday, but it is also Confirmation day for fourteen of our young parishioners.  Congratulations to them and to their families.  Please keep them in special prayer today.  Come, Holy Spirit!

Last week, I had the privilege of participating in the graduation ceremonies at Owensboro Catholic Middle School.  Our parish was well represented among the graduates.  It is the custom at OCMS to give a “Christian Service Award” to one boy and one girl from the class who best demonstrate the attitudes and behavior expected of a Catholic teen.   We had several students from the Cathedral nominated for this award, and I am very proud of each of them.  Our parishioner, Adam Hayden, received the award.  Congratulations, Adam!

Our new sound system was installed this past week.  As I write this, it is not yet functional, so I am unable to offer my opinion as to the hoped-for improvement.  You will be better judges of that than I am.  Although the system will be operational from now on, the final adjustments will only be made after the interior renovation is complete.  I remind you, that there are individual hearing devices available for those who need such assistance.  Just come to the vesting sacristy before Mass to request one.

On Monday evening, several people from the Restoration and Renewal Steering Committee, accompanied by our architect, will meet with the Diocesan Building Committee to present our plans for the renovation.  This is a very important meeting.  We need the approval of that committee (and also of the Priests’ Council) before Bishop Medley will give his final permission to sign a contract with Granda Liturgical Arts, Inc.

Love, Fr. John
